Is your target audience on Snapchat?

Questions, questions, questions, about a social platform that has been around since 2011. What is snapchat? How do you use it? How do you gain a following? What are some proven strategies to gain a following? As a Small business and/or a Marketer I’m sure you’ve been asking and searching for answers to these same questions. And I’m here to help you get those answers!  The first question we need to ask is, “Is our target audience on Snapchat?” Read on to find out more!

Snapchat is the latest Social platform and it’s making a whole lot of noise; brands like WWE, GE, GrubHub, TacoBell, McDonalds and more are using the platform to stay relevant with their target audience. In 2013 Facebook offered to buy out Snapchat for 3 billion dollars,  because they understood early on how Snapchat would significantly change the way we communicate to each other using our mobile devices. (Keep in mind, Facebook  purchased Instagram and both those social media platforms have been ranking at the very top!) Although Mark Z from Facebook wasn’t able to get his hands on Snapchat, the platform is experiencing huge growth and according to ComCore, Snapchat ranks 3rd right behind Instagram at #2 and Facebook at #1 for Millennials. I will not be surprised if these numbers change as we continue into the year.

Let’s take a deeper look at the statistics, according to  the Top Charts for Social Networking  in the iTunes App store (image to the right) you will find that Snapchat is in the top 10 at number 6 (as of 3/30/24). The attention of your target audience will change as new communication technology changes.  The question is,  will you be there when that change takes place and not get left behind?

Now let’s simplify what Snapchat is: Snapchat is a mobile app that allows users to take photos or videos (called snaps), share them with their followers – and here’s the kicker – these “snaps”automatically self-destruct forever after a set time. Never to be seen again. (Unless you were clever enough to screen capture it – hats off to you!)

Below is a Snapchat Demographic infographic I put together that specifies the age ranges of U.S. users who are now using Snapchat. If you notice that your target audience is a dominant user here, definitely consider using this platform.

As you can see, 45% of the users are between the ages of 18-24 years and 26% of the users are between the ages of 35-34 years – and remember, these numbers are growing daily! Social Media is changing daily, that means we as Small Businesses and Marketers  need to change the way we communicate with our audience and customers too. Jim Rohn once said, “For things to change, you have to change!”  Roll with the tides, and get on the Snapchat bandwagon! And when you get on there, ADD ME (ShaunAyala)! See you there!
